We are in a business where all of our products come from the Earth, and the jewelry industry, in particular, relies heavily upon mining companies to generate source materials for their products.

The sad fact is — mining is a very "dirty" business and the production of one beautiful gold ring will generate five tons of environmental waste, contaminating water and lands which endangers the health and lives of humans and animals.

The negative impacts of mining have forced people and businesses alike to take a long, hard look at where their products come from, how they are made, and to what extent they are impacting the Earth, its lands and its people.

We want you to know that all precious metals at Hoover & Strong are recycled from the Earth’s existing metal supply, which means we DO NOT BUY metals from mining companies. We don’t believe in it and, as a refiner, we just don’t have to. Over half our metal supply comes entirely from scrap metal purchased from jewelers. The remainder of our supply comes from other refineries that also recycle scrap metal. We feel GREAT about that and you can too!

HARMONY Metals™

All precious metals at Hoover & Strong including gold, platinum and palladium are 100% recycled.

When it is necessary to obtain metals from other sources, we buy metal from other earth-friendly refineries that, like us, only use recycled metal. We require any secondary refinery to provide in writing, full disclosure of their metal sources. A small percentage of Hoover & Strong chains and clasps are not created in-house. Those finished items, supplied by outside vendors, are not guaranteed 100% recycled.

HARMONY Diamonds™

Hoover & Strong has over 20,000 certified loose diamonds to choose from. All diamonds are conflict-free and come from sources that are full participants in the Kimberley Process Certification System. Additionally, you now have the option of searching our selection of HARMONY Diamonds which includes recycled diamonds AND Canadian diamonds.

HARMONY Gems™

While Hoover & Strong understands and caters to the needs of the jewelry industry, it is very important to us to minimize the environmental impacts of gemstone mining.

We strongly advocate and support the non-profit organizations that are dedicated to increasing the responsible practices of gemstone miners. All of our gemstones come from fair trade companies that only source their stones from environmentally and socially-responsible mines throughout the world.

Our "GREEN" Processes

Hoover & Strong is fully committed to recycling and protecting the environment in every way possible. Our facility is operated at the highest standards in the industry and we expect no less from our vendors and suppliers. Throughout the Hoover & Strong factory, we’ve instituted internal processes that re-use materials and conserve energy.

In the Mill and Jewelry Division: 

• All clean manufacturing scrap from our operations is re-melted.
• Floor sweeps, sink sludge and mixed scrap are all refined.
• Cooling water from casting and melting is re-circulated within the plant.
• All copper and brass is recycled from the tool and die department.

In the Refining Division: 

• A newly developed gold refining process reduces the quantity of waste products generated per ounce recovered by 75%.
• A newly developed platinum and palladium refining process reduces the quantity of waste products generated per ounce recovered by 60%.
• All furnace and chemical exhaust fumes are processed through a scrubber system that removes all harmful particulates, cleaning the air before it is released into the environment.
• The water treatment facility removes all harmful materials from our waste water before it is evaporated. Absolutely no waste water is discharged into the environment.
• All cooling water for our refining smelting furnaces is provided by a fully recycled, no-loss water cooling system.
