950 Hard Platinum Information Sheet

950 HARD PLATINUM (PTH) - white alloy - 0.952 platinum

Hoover & Strong’s new platinum alloy was developed as a direct response to customers looking for a harder platinum alloy. The result is PTH, harder than the traditional 950 alloys without the need for heat treatment. For improved casting, PTH offers a wider temperature range between liquid and solid states enabling a better cavity fill. PTH has an annealed hardness of 180HV, 33% harder than 950 platinum-ruthenium and 64% harder than 900 platinum-iridium. This alloy improves rigidity and wear over traditional alloys, and is ideal for customers who want a stiffer alloy for prongs, pave applications and clasps, or for those who want their alloy to have increased resistance to deformation and impact. PTH has a high initial work hardening rate so that stones are easily set, but once the prong is bent into position, it stays there. PTH is ideal for all platinum jewelry manufacturing applications, whether investment casting or general fabrication, and retains the excellent white color and luster associated with 950 quality platinum alloys.

Recommended Uses: PTH can be used for all general fabrication techniques.

PROCESSING RECOMMENDATIONS:
Working For best results, H&S recommends PTH is reduced by a minimum of 50% cold work between anneals.
Annealing If using a furnace, anneal between 1475° and 1832°F for approximately 10 – 30 minutes, depending on size. If using a torch, heat to orange. PTH does not require quenching.
Investment Casting PTH can be cast using standard phosphate bonded investments. Recommended casting temperature: 3360° - 3540°F (1850° - 1950°C). Recommended flask temperature: 1450°-1650°F (785° - 900°C). Temperatures may differ from these recommendations depending on processing considerations.
Soldering Standard soldering techniques may be used with PTH. Care must be taken when using 1700 platinum solder so that the PTH does not melt. Results can only be guaranteed when using H&S recommended solders. PTH can be welded using techniques identical to those used for other platinum alloys. Recommended Solders: All H&S platinum step solders can be used with PTH
